Holiday Party Do's and Don'ts

last Saturday i had a few friends round for cocktails and good cheer. i also learned some things to watch out for in order to make a party go a bit smoother....some Do's and Don'ts (or Dos and Don'ts, or Do's and Don't's).

DO set the stage-even some store bought biscuits (lower right) looked better around all that glitter and candlelight. the sausage cheese ball things (lower left) were a hit, especially after adding a liberal dash of Sriracha.

DON'T leave a candle burning...no, wait, DON'T use those damn silk bobeches. this would never have happened if i had never put them around the candle.

DO have your friend Mindy, Lady Hockaday, bring her famous mustard dip (recipe at end of post)

DON'T run into your guests (in this case Kevin, Lord Hockaday) and spill their red wine when scurrying to put out the burning bobeche.
DO consider yourself very lucky to have the Countess of Horsewood around to take care of the stain.

DO have clove studded pomanders around to help cover up the acrid swell of burnt polyester and plastic (or whatever the bobeche was made out of).

and most importantly, DO NOT let your squirrel nut cracker have a few shots after spying the pickle in the tree-he will just get obnoxious and smoke in your apartment.
Mindy, Lady Hockaday,'s Mustard Dip
(recipe borrowed from Kari Snyder)
1/2 cup Mayo
1/2 cup Sour Cream
1/2 cup Mustard
1/4 sugar
1/2 of a Dry Ranch Packet
1/8 Minced Onion
1/2 tsp horseradish
Mix together and serve with pretzels (hard or soft), corn dogs or (and this actually is ALL Mindy) mix with cooked yoke and make deviled eggs.
