For as long as I can remember the slow growing White Star magnolia (Magnolia stellata) in it's circular bed next to the driveway. This year the blooms were few, a result, perhaps, of the stress of last years drought. Last Autumn Junior and I went to town planting dozens and dozens of mixed tulips beneath the tree, and the payoff this Spring has been wonderful!
This was on Sunday, April 28th.
One of the few, gorgeous, blooms.
And this was on Tuesday the 30th! The heat really moved things along.
Usually I prefer a bit more control over what colors are being planted, but we just took the mixed bag and went with it, planting the tulips around the magnolia and up in the larger front bed.
These creamy-edged pink tulips were a lovely surprise.
